Biography
A practice
across scales.
Satoru Yoshioka’s photographic practice moves between the extraordinary spaces of scientific research and the material possibilities of the photographic image.
His early monochrome Polaroid work was exhibited in the United States, Japan and Europe. After first visiting SLAC in California in 2005, he began photographing there in 2006 and went on to photograph CERN in 2007. His continuing enquiry into high-energy physics laboratories considers both experimental devices and the everyday environments around them.
His later work includes a collaboration with neuroscientist Hermina Nedelescu, PhD, and the development of platinum-palladium prints on Tosa washi, made in dialogue with local papermakers and other collaborators. Handmade photobooks form another strand of his practice.
Yoshioka received a Certificate of Achievement in Photography from Palomar College in 1996. He returned to Kochi in 2007 after working in the United States.
