| * Best of 2008 : This year's hottest photos from British Journal of Photography " Which photographers made an impression on you this year? We asked experts from Martin Parr to Elizabeth Biondi who they would nominate as best of 2008" 'I think I first came across Satoru Yoshioka's work in the late 1990s. I remember mostly black-and-white Polaroid portraits, but he now has a totally different style and subject. His photographic interest in particle physics was sparked with a visit to SLAC (the Stanford Linear Accelerator) in California and over several years he has photographed similar experiments in the US and Japan, and CERN (the European Laboratory for Network Collision). I have seen numerous big physics experiment photographs, but what strikes me about Satoru's saturated colour work - which he shoots at day and night - is the access he gains. His investigative wanderings capture not only the sheer scale but also the deepest recesses, smallest details and quietest corners of these huge experiments. Satorus is visually communicating the very pinnacle of contemporary particle physics research, which, if successful, will hopefully answer some of the fundamental questions of science and increase our understanding of the universe.' *Andy / Adam Goff, picture editor at the New Scientist |
